The 17th century is a time of great innovations in Italian music. The developing “Stil Moderno” was tantamount to a musical revolution: the new monodies were intended to set the passions of the soul in motion.

The fact that such Italian innovations were introduced more quickly in Germany than elsewhere is due to the strong trade routes that developed between the two countries, especially between the cities of Venice and Nuremberg, also called the “German Venice”. The rise of the Italians as leading composers in Europe caused the most important German musicians to go to Italian courts or music chapels for their training or employment. By 1620, the new style of Italian music could be heard throughout Germany.
